about

Without incriminating anyone, I will say that this song began with a true story. That is, a certain mother-in-law of mine and a certain beloved friend of hers may or may not have stolen flowers out of the neighbors’ yards for their third beloved friend’s wedding. There is something so innocently devious about stealing flowers, and that juxtaposition delighted me. I wanted to capture that playful naughtiness in the song. I began playing around with the idea, and - as is often the case when I’m writing alone - Trevor started to throw out ideas from the next room. A few verses into the song he poked his head in to say that it almost sounded like two kids playing at getting married. With that insightful advice from my co-writer, the images began bubbling up: playing dress-up with clothes from the attic, letting red balloons fly, stealing from the neighbor’s garden, befriending the animals in the orchard. Now the song lives, I think, somewhere between a childhood game and an adult promise, and I get a kick every time we sing it. I also have to add that, although the song lived happily for four years before we recorded it, it came to it’s full fruition in the studio with the addition of Sander Vinberg’s playful bass lines and Ben Smith’s perfectly unusual drums.

lyrics

Stolen Flowers
Written by Sylvie Davidson

Ain’t got nothing to do today
we might as well get married
I’ll tie my hair with garden twine
and I’ll paint my lips with berries

Go up to the attic and
bring that old suitcase down
you put on your granddad’s suit
and I’ll wear my mama’s wedding gown

We ain’t got no money
cause we while away the hours
so whittle me a wedding ring
and I will steal the flowers

Chorus:
Stolen flowers, stolen flowers
I will carry stolen flowers.

We don’t need a mailman
to send our invitations
we’ll tie em to some red balloons
and just set em sailing

We can make a wedding feast
of borrowed potatoes
strawberries and carrots
and the neighbor’s prize tomatoes

Over at the fairgrounds
there’s blue ribbon roses
we can walk away with them
right underneath their noses

Chorus

That orchard on the edge of town
has peaches, pears, and apples
underneath their branches we
will make our wedding chapel

The deer will be our guests and
and the old owl can marry us
the birds will sing me down the isle
and the fox will be our witness

Chorus

Through the seasons you and me
we’ll see all kinds of weather
and every springtime we’ll go out
and we’ll steal flowers together

Stolen flowers, stolen flowers
I will carry stolen flowers
Stolen flowers, stolen flowers
when we’re married, stolen flowers
Stolen flowers, stolen flowers
when we’re buried, stolen flowers
