about

Trevor and I were sitting in the Nashville airport, waiting to board a flight to New York, when I got a message from a friend in Seattle. She was making a short film, set in the Dust Bowl, and she needed a song. She described the story, in which a woman comes to say farewell to her lover and they dance a final dance in an empty bar. She needed something era appropriate, danceable, emotional, and heart felt, and she wondered if I had any songs that might fit the bill? Nothing leapt out at me immediately, but I like a good songwriting challenge, so I told her I’d play around with writing something. We boarded the plane and I pulled out my notebook. Inspired by the film’s story and influenced by a fascination with the Dust Bowl era, the song started to come almost immediately. By the time we landed in New York I’d written the first verse. In the cab from Laguardia to Brooklyn I got Trevor involved, and we pulled up to our destination with a chorus and a second verse. We finished the song that night and recorded a demo using the voice memo app on my phone. We sent it off to my friend figuring that if it wasn’t right for the film we still got a good song out of the deal. To our delight, she loved it, and you can find her beautiful film, Until the Well is Dry, on the WATCH page of this website.

lyrics

Thirsty
written by Sylvie Davidson and Trevor Wheetman

Oh my love, oh my love, can you tell?
I am thirsty
give me water
find a spring or dig a well
bring the water back
I will drink from you hands
oh my love, oh my love, can you tell?

I am hungry
give me apples
from a tree no one can fell
pick the sweetest one
place it on my tongue
oh my love, oh my love, can you tell?

Will this thirst of mine be never satisfied?
I will drink till the well is dry

I am weary
give me respite
lay me down and make me well
I am coming home
I am dust and bone
oh my love, oh my love, can you tell?
I am dust and bone
oh my love, oh my love, can you tell?
